What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Although a person can be diagnosed with ADHD at any age, symptoms need to be present before the age of 7, last for at least 6 months, and interfere with at least 2 areas of life (school, home, friendships). About 3-5% of children in the United States have the disorder. There are primarily 3 types of ADHD. Predominately hyperactive-impulsive, Predominately Inattentive (previously referred to as ADD), and Combined (symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsiveness, and inattentiveness)

Hyperactive-Implusive: extremely active and acts before thinking, interrupts others.

Inattentive (ADD): trouble focusing, forgetful, distracted.

Combined: extremely active, acts before thinking, and trouble focusing.

Functional imaging has shown that the frontal lobe is one of major brain areas to have different activity levels in people with ADHD compared to people without the disorder. The frontal lobe is involved in executive functions such as planning, organizing, sequencing, working memory, and inhibition. Genetics and environmental toxins are believed to play a role in causing ADHD.

Some children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can have comorbid disorders including but not limited to Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Substance Abuse, Learning Disabilities, and Sensory Processing Disorder. Children with ADHD often have difficulties with friendships, academics, and at home.

Lynx helps children with ADHD improve executive functions, behavior, emotional regulation, and learning. Lynx provides support to parents as well teachers and other professionals working with children with ADHD.
