There are about 1.5 million new cases of traumatic brain injury every year. Acquired Brain injury is another term for traumatic brain injury, referring that the injury happened after birth.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is caused by an external force, resulting in damage to one or more areas of the brain. A closed injury and a penetrating injury are two types of TBI. A closed injury occurs when the brain is damaged without the skull breaking. Examples of causes of closed injuries are falls, shaken baby syndrome, and car accidents. A penetrating injury occurs when part of the skull breaks. Abuse or a gunshot wound can cause penetrating injuries.

Non-Traumatic Brain Injury is another classification of brain injury. Don’t be fooled by its name, as the injury is still “traumatic” to the brain. Strokes, seizures, tumors, drowning, or toxicity are examples of causes of non-traumatic brain injury.

Diffuse Axonal Injury is a common type of brain injury. It is caused by rapid acceleration and deceleration, which can occur in a car accident, sports injury, fall, or military explosion. The long axons of the brain’s white matter tear when it shifts inside of the skull. Even though the damage usually goes undetected by CT and MRI scans, the person suffers from negative consequences from the injury.

Concussion is commonly called a mild brain injury, although one may argue there is no such thing as a “mild” injury to the brain. Common causes are falls and sport accidents. Concussions can produce a variety of symptoms such as headaches, confusion, memory difficulties, nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, poor balance, slow mental processing, and irritability.

Negative consequences of brain injury include but are not limited to cognitive, motor, communication, and visual perceptual difficulties. Brain injury can cause social difficulties, reduced motivation, sleeping disturbances, anxiety, and depression. provides outpatient services in order to continue to maximize the brain’s ability of healing.
