What is Sensory Processing Disorder?

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) was previously referred to as Sensory Integration Disorder. Almost everyone has sensory related issues, but for some people it causes severe interruptions in daily life. Sensory Processing Disorder is not a single overarching disorder; It has subtypes such as Sensory Modulation Disorder, Sensory Discrimination Disorder, and Sensory Based Motor Disorder. Within each of these subtypes, there are further subcategories. Sensory Processing Disorder can be a stand alone diagnosis or a child can have comorbid diagnoses. Sensory Integration Theory was first developed about 50 years ago by Jean Ayers. Therapeutic activities are geared to help children integrate and make sense of sensory information.

Lynx makes therapy fun for children with Sensory Processing Disorder while they gain the skills necessary to overcome daily challenges. Also, it has always been a fundamental component of our therapy practice to empower parents. We help parents recognize and understand their child’s behavior, as it may or may not be sensory related. We collaborate with parents as well teach them appropriate, practical strategies they need and can use to help their child with Sensory Processing Disorder.
